If you are planning on going skiing this season or even going for a visit to the chill factore then it may help to do some preparation to get the most out of your trip.
You don’t have to be super fit to enjoy skiing, but a bit of preparation goes a long way!
Even if you do not ski, after the recent wintry weather in the UK it is always advisable to work on your strength and balance in order to prevent falling on the ice!

It is generally recommended to begin any skiing-related fitness programme at least six weeks before you go. However, if you are heading to the slopes for half term, starting now will make a difference to how you feel at the end of that first day.
Cycling and running are excellent aerobic exercises for skiing, these not only build up cardiovascular fitness but build leg strength as well.
Leg strength is the best way to help and preserve your knees.
Bored of the gym? Consider rock climbing or rowing as good ways to build strength for skiing Core strength is vital to keep you going in tough conditions or deep powder.
Here at Altrincham Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Clinic, we have put together a video to help with your skiing preparation. This is designed to strengthen up your legs, mobilise your thoracic spine and fire up your core and balance.

This programme will:
- Build your stamina and endurance in the quadriceps and the glutes using body weight squats and forward lunges.
- Give you segmental control and separation of the upper trunk from the pelvis for efficient turning on the slopes and keeping mobility in your spine.
- Help you work on weight transfer with independent control of the ankle, knee and hip in conjunction with enhanced dynamic balance work, resulting in beautiful carving turns.
- All of these exercises will help on the snow and ice either in the mountains or negotiating the slippy pavements here in the UK!
