Better Running

25/03/2026 by altphysio

If you run regularly, your glutes matter more than you might think.

Many runners rely heavily on their quads and calves, while the glutes, especially glute medius and minimus, don’t always do their share of the work.

When that happens, other areas compensate, often leading to knee pain, tight hips, sore hamstrings or lower back niggles.

Why strong glutes matter

Your glutes each play a key role in how you run:

  • Glute maximus provides power and helps drive you forward
  • Glute medius keeps your pelvis stable when you’re on one leg
  • Glute minimus supports control and stability as your foot lands

When these muscles are strong and working well together, you’re likely to notice better control, improved efficiency and less strain through your knees and hips.

Getting race ready

With marathon season approaching, it’s time to move from mat work into standing exercises that better reflect how your body works when running.

Cath has put together a short video focusing on glutes, quads, calves and balance.

You might notice a bit of wobble; that’s completely normal.

Keep it simple. You don’t need hours in the gym.
Just 10 minutes, 2 to 3 times a week, can make a real difference.

Running is repetitive. The more balanced and resilient your muscles are, the better your body copes with the miles.
Think of strength work as maintenance for your running.

If you’re noticing niggles when you run or want some guidance on strengthening, call 0161 926 9988 or visit our website to find out how we can help.
