As marathon and half marathon training builds, we are seeing more runners struggling with niggles as mileage, speed work and hills increase.
Common complaints at this stage include
• Knee pain
• Hip discomfort
• Shin splints
One factor we often see behind these issues is reduced control around the pelvis. When the side glutes and gluteus maximus are not providing enough support, extra strain can pass down through the hips, knees and shins.
Watch this video from Cath, which shows one of our go-to, non-weight-bearing exercise programmes to improve control around the pelvic girdle and strengthen the glute muscles.
These exercises are often a good starting point before you increase distance and speed training.
Last week we met with a runner experiencing shin splints. By strengthening first, before progressing training, we can support recovery and reduce the risk of ongoing pain. Progress is then reviewed before moving on to more challenging, weightbearing exercises. To find out more about managing shin splints visit our blog space here
