Looking after your body, one small step at a time

20/01/2026 by altphysio

As we move into the new year, it’s a good time to step away from strict resolutions and focus instead on small, manageable lifestyle choices that genuinely support your body.

Simple habits around movement, sleep, nutrition and recovery can make a real difference to how you feel, how well you move and how resilient your body is to injury.

This month, we’re sharing a more balanced approach to health, one that’s realistic, maintainable and designed to support long term musculoskeletal health rather than quick fixes.

Moving Well, Living Well

Regular movement does not need to be intense to be effective.
Gentle, consistent activity supports joint health, muscle strength and overall mobility, while also playing an important role in mental wellbeing.

Moving with others, whether that’s walking outdoors with a friend, attending a class, or simply staying socially connected, can boost mood, reduce stress and help healthy habits feel easier to maintain. Simple strengthening exercises you can do at home, such as squats and single-leg balance work, improve stability and reduce injury risk, while time outdoors provides fresh air, daylight and a natural lift in energy. Together, movement and connection support both body and mind.

Sleep

Sleep plays a crucial role in recovery and injury prevention. During sleep, your body repairs tissues, regulates pain levels and restores energy.

Poor or disrupted sleep can increase sensitivity to pain, slow healing and make it harder for muscles and joints to recover. Prioritising regular sleep routines is one of the most effective ways to support your body.

Hormonal Status

Hormones influence bone health, muscle strength, energy levels and recovery. Factors such as stress, poor sleep and inadequate nutrition can disrupt hormonal balance and affect how your body responds to exercise and healing.

Looking after sleep, nutrition and stress levels helps support a more balanced internal environment and better physical resilience.

Supporting your body from the inside

What you put into your body has a direct impact on how well it moves, heals and recovers.

Good nutrition provides the building blocks your body needs to maintain muscle strength and repair tissues.

Adequate protein intake is particularly important for supporting muscle health, especially if you are managing pain, recovering from injury or increasing activity levels. Staying well hydrated also helps joints move smoothly and supports muscle function.

Alcohol intake can influence sleep quality, inflammation and recovery. Reducing alcohol, even slightly, can support better healing, improved energy levels and a more resilient musculoskeletal system over time.

Together, these everyday choices play a key role in supporting long-term physical health.

Housekeeping Update

We wanted to share an important update regarding our Bupa provision.

After a great deal of thought, we have made the difficult decision to stop accepting new Bupa referrals from the beginning of January 2026.

This has not been an easy choice, particularly as we know some of our long-standing and much-valued clients hold Bupa insurance, and we have been a Bupa provider for over 25 years.

Unfortunately, Bupa physiotherapy fees have remained unchanged since 2011, and with the rising costs of running the clinic over the years, it has become increasingly difficult for us to sustain offering Bupa-funded appointments.
We are genuinely sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.

There are some locally based practitioners still accepting BUPA referrals, and you can find them by following this link:

As a reminder, our YouTube channel is always available with a growing collection of movement and Pilates videos.
It’s a helpful resource if you want to stay active at home, revisit exercises or build gentle movement into your routine between sessions.
